Abel Mendoza Monge
Among the most recent wineries in Rioja, one of the most recognized is Abel Mendoza Monge. It was founded in 1988 in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, a town with a great winemaking tradition.
Although in the beginning they dedicated themselves to producing young red wines, they have shifted their focus and are now working on aged wines even though they do still produce some exceptional young wines.
The vineyards, totalling 16 hectares, are located on the edge of the Ebro, amongst varied terrain combining clay soils, marlstone and fine sandstone. The vines are 30 year old Tempranillo and Malvasia and they use organic farming methods.
This change of direction came in 1998 with the red Abel Mendoza Personal Selection 1998, aged for eleven months in oak barrels carefully selected from French makers (Nevers and Allier). They only produced 4,500 bottles.
