Info: The Godello vines of Viña Abad are located on the slopes that border the river Sil, in northwestern Spain. There, they enjoy a microclimate influenced by the Atlantic and Continental climates. Mountains to the west afford the region a drier environment than most areas of Galicia. Viña Abad’s vines receive generous sunlight and heat during the short summers. The vines are planted in granite, clay and slate soils, which in concert with the climate, yield a crisp, fresh wine. Meaning “Valley of Gold,” the region of Valdeorras has cultivated grapes since Roman times. In recent history, it has become known as the premier producer of Godello.
Close to extinction in the ‘70’s, Godello was saved thanks to the efforts of winemakers in Valdeorras. Its subsequent popularity is due to Godello’s ability to express a sense of place and its good acidity and minerality.
